Transform Workshop

Join the Masterclass, "Getting into the Groove", for adults returning to study

There are currently two delivery options available for the study masterclasses. Participants may choose the weekend program, delivered across two consecutive face-to-face weekends and offered in various locations throughout the year, or a four-day intensive delivery for those who prefer a more immersive learning experience.

These programs provide a valuable opportunity to connect with other adults returning to education and to become part of a supportive learning community. Completing the masterclass before commencing your formal program of study allows you to focus on learning the content itself, rather than trying to master essential study and technical skills—such as setting up documents, inserting charts, creating tables of contents, sourcing information, and managing assessments—while also balancing work, family, and other commitments.

Regardless of the delivery mode, all participants will complete the same core content and activities. A personal laptop with Microsoft Word installed is required to participate fully in the program and complete the practical tasks. The core topics covered in the Masterclass are outlined below.

Masterclass - Topics

The following topics are included in this masterclass.

Time Management

Effective time management is essential for successful study. We explore how to use planners and diaries to organise your workload, including the benefits of electronic diaries, paper-based systems, or a combination of both, so you can choose what works best for your lifestyle.

Note-taking

Note-taking is a critical learning skill, and today there are many digital tools that can replicate—and even enhance—the traditional pen-and-paper experience. We explore a range of electronic apps, including those used with e-pencils or similar tools, and discuss strategies to help you develop effective, personalised note-taking practices. And for those who, like me, are fans of paper journals, highlighters, and pens, we also spend time exploring effective note-taking strategies using traditional paper-based methods.

Document Set-up

How well do you really know Microsoft Word? This session focuses on using built-in tools that make assignment preparation more efficient and professional. You will learn how to create and use templates, saving time and reducing stress when assembling assessments.

Useful Tools

There are many free and low-cost tools available to students. During this session, we explore a selection of these tools, discussing when and how they can be used to enhance productivity, organisation, and the quality of your work

Plagiarism

Many students unintentionally plagiarise due to a lack of understanding about academic conventions. This session clarifies what plagiarism is, how it occurs, and how developing a clear understanding of citation rules can help you avoid it.

Source Information

Knowing what information to source and how to use it appropriately is a core academic skill. We discuss credible sources, effective searching strategies, and the responsible use of AI tools, including when and how they can support learning without compromising academic integrity.

Reading Strategies

Many students find the volume of required reading challenging. In this session, we introduce practical strategies to help you read more efficiently, improve comprehension, and engage critically with academic texts.

Referencing

Once sources are identified, keeping them organised is essential. We explore referencing software such as Mendeley and EndNote, demonstrate the benefits, and show how these tools can be used to generate reference lists. Importantly, I also explain the purpose of referencing and why understanding the underlying principles is key to using software effectively.

Assessment Types

Assessments take many forms, including essays, reports, proposals, presentations, tests, and exams. Each type requires different skills and approaches. We examine common assessment formats and discuss how to adapt your study strategies to meet varying assessment requirements.

Teamwork

Group work requires patience, collaboration, and strong communication skills. We explore practical strategies to manage group dynamics, contribute effectively, and make teamwork a more positive and productive experience.

Presentation Skills

Many courses require presentations delivered individually or in groups, face-to-face, online, or via recorded video. This session focuses on effective presentation techniques, creating professional visual materials, and using technology to enhance engagement and clarity.

Health & Wellbeing

Health and wellbeing are vital to academic success. We discuss the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and self-care strategies to support sustained focus, resilience, and overall wellbeing throughout your studies.
