Bryce Courtenay Matthew Flinders’ Cat

I read Bryce Courtenay’s novel, Matthew Flinders’ Cat, without reading any synopsis, as I didn’t want it spoiled before I read the story. I had read many Bryce Courtenay novels and, when it was released, decided to read it. I thought it was going to be about the voyage of Matthew Flinders and include some aspect of life with his cat, Trim. While it does include tales of Matthew Flinders and his cat, it presents the story of a once-distinguished barrister, Bill O’Shannessy, now a drunk who sleeps under the statue of Matthew Flinders’ cat at the State Library of New South Wales, and reveals the darker side of Sydney’s underworld. I was reminded of this book when I visited the State Library of New South Wales and noticed the bronze statue.
